We’d been looking at work by artist Carol Bove that often employed a precise geometric 3D frame to house a hanging organic object of some sort, like a piece of driftwood suspended in a brass rectangle. We’d been thinking about how a chair might act as a choreographer… what if a chair activated your awareness of gravity? What if sitting, which is in essence a collaboration with gravity and trust, was thought of as language?

The chairs lived at Phillips de Pury for about two years and now reside at Patrick Parrish Gallery in NYC.

This set of two chairs and a console debuted at NOHO Next in 2011 in a group show curated by Sight Unseen showcasing emerging design. The felted seat covers were made by our friend Ashley Helvey, a textile artist based in Seattle.
