Paul and Sarah are both architects and were very open to experimenting with materials and aesthetics. We’d had discussions about the famous Herzog De Meuron winery in northern California made of stacked gabion baskets… gabion being a welded wire mesh container filled 4” to 6” stones. Paul wondered about making a fence using this approach and we were totally into it.

We created what we believe to be the first gabion fence. We used welded wire mesh covered with ivy as outdoor walls. We used native plants to create butterfly gardens and a very contrasted energy to all the industrial-material choices.

The site on which a somewhat experimental hiveMODULAR home is built in a NE Minneapolis neighborhood becomes a perfect canvas to try some new approaches to fencing and outdoor walls.
