RO/LU is a studio based in Minneapolis / Saint Paul that works on art and design related projects. Founded in 2003 as a landscape office by Matt Olson and Mike Brady, in 2005 an “open practice” was adopted and though they still actively work with landscape architecture, their production has evolved over the years to include sculptural furniture, performance, clothing, writing, video and more. Frequently collaborating across disciplines, many of their activities fall in between specific categories.

The studio believes their work emerges through motion and stays as active as possible by accepting projects across a broad spectrum of budget and scale – from a small backyard for a young artist couple to a large scale residency in a museum. Each project seems to inform the last and the mind can be changed over and over, changing, much like a landscape, as each moment passes. The gentle, open parameters that guide them were inspired by the ideas of composer John Cage, the anti-specialization position Buckminster Fuller took, the sprawling approach to work the Eames Office took and the genuine joy experienced through curiosity and love.

They began releasing conceptually driven furniture pieces in 2010 through Mondo Cane Gallery in New York and Volume Gallery in Chicago and over the last four years have shown their work internationally. They were the 2012 Open Field Artists in Residence at the Walker Art Center and Matt Olson completed a month long Robert Rauschenberg Residency in 2013. They were featured in the recently published PIN-UP Interviews book and have been covered in the New York Times, The WSJ Magazine, Wallpaper, Surface and other press outlets. Their work lives in many esteemed private collections and the Permanent Collection of the Walker Art Center.

Some of our clients know exactly what they want and we just execute the work, some let us make all the design decisions, but generally the end result is a collaborative effort. the design process is fun, thought provoking, educational and satisfying. here’s a bit about what you can expect if you’re interested in working with us.

first, a meeting at your home where we learn about each other and begin discussing design goals, aesthetic interests and budget. if you’re interested in moving forward, we take measurements, photos and video of your property and the process begins. this period of discovery is a lot of fun. we return with a plan and discuss, react, visualize and decide what revisions are necessary. communication is the key. at the end you’re given a finished plan suitable for construction and our bid to install the work.

our ability and experience in communicating with clients is something we’re as proud of as our design work. we think doing work on your property should be one of the great experiences you have as a homeowner.

Our beliefs are very important to us.
we believe in design. we believe design should concern itself with the everyday and be affordable and accessible to everyone. we believe surrounding yourself with things you care about makes your life better. we believe modern progressive design inspires people. we believe old things can look perfect with new things. we believe creativity and communication almost always makes the world a better place. we think we have a responsibility to improve things when we solve problems. we’re always searching for new knowledge and daring it to change our context. we believe respect for history is necessary to give growth direction. we believe the smallest details can have large impact.
we believe the world’s an amazing place.

matt olson and mike brady, two minneapolis artist/designers who were losing touch with day jobs in the advertising industry founded rosenlof/lucas four years ago. they were interested in using their creativity to enrich peoples lives and they made landscaping their medium. they now spend their time helping people express themselves, teaching, learning and beautifying the planet.
